Crabs Spook Devils on Halloween in the China Pub Company YSC
Crabs spook Devils on Halloween (31/10/08)
Guinness Shanghai Hairy Crabs conquered the Vermilion Beijing Devils 20-5 on Friday to win the China Pub Company Yellow Sea Cup.
The final, played at King’s Park, Hong Kong, was reached by the teams having beaten contenders Guangzhou Rams and Seoul Survivors this season.
The Yellow Sea Cup, has been the most hotly contested competition for expat club sides in mainland China since its inauguration in 2005 and until now the Crabs have not been able to get their claws on it.
But three tries plus one daring drop goal and a conversion from Cameron Young mean the cup will now take pride of place in a burgeoning cabinet at the Big Bamboo, Shanghai.
John Woodberry, club coach said: “It was a tough game but the Crabs fully deserved the win. With tries by James Holder and John Goddard and Thibault Oberlin plus decisive kicking from Cameron Young, the score reflected our better fitness and skill across the park.”
It was John Goddard’s last game with the Crabs after two years with the Shanghai team.
Carl Bayliss, club captain, said: “We had a simple goal this year and that was to win the Yellow Sea Cup for the first time since its inception, and thanks to the hard work of the players, committee and the supporters we have achieved it. This year we have grown and developed a player base that will provide access to rugby for all levels of players in Shanghai.
“The game was physical and fast throughout, and it is a testament to the Devils‘quality and passion that they made us work so hard for the result. Colin and the guys really had us against the ropes for much of the game.”
The Beijing Devils have been the cup holders for the last two years and didn’t let the title go without a fight.
Colin Brown, captain of the Beijing Devils, said during the cup presentation, “Look after the cup for us. We want it back.”
On Friday the Crabs were also presented with the Ambassadors Cup, traditionally contested by Beijing and Shanghai. In total, Shanghai have won three cups this year, kicking off the year by winning the Beijing Icebreaker Tournament. Their sights are now set on the Guinness Shanghai International Rugby Sevens Tournament in November.
